Just a few minutes ago at midnight my boyfriend called to wish me a happy birthday. Some other friends(?) also shouted what I assumed to be birthday wishes in the background. He asked me about my plans for the day and then said he would call me back again in about 20 minutes.
"It's your birthday" he said, "don't cry."
Today I'll be at my parents' house, hanging out with family. That was what I originally had planned. I think it will still be fun, since there will be lots of chaos with all the little kids running around. And my family is sweet-- I am sure they will make my birthday nice. I'll try not to think about the things that are making me feel sad and buck up and enjoy the day. Thank all of you lovelies who gave me such great suggestions of what to do today. I'm sure over the next couple of days I'll try all of them. I'm particularly excited to walk around naked while watching The Last Unicorn. Molly, dear, how do you know me so well?

Unicorn, now with (some) color
My tattoo is still not done yet, but it's definitely coming together!

I wish I could say that someone had called out "Jules!" and I turned and grinned in surprise and that's why my eyes are all big and I look kind of manic. But actually I was feeling tired and droopy so I widened my eyes on purpose. Slightly, or so I thought.

Have I mentioned my love of unicorns?
I don't think I'll need to anymore. I think it's pretty obvious now....

I think he did a really good job on the outline, what with all my squirming and writhing.

As for the FAQs:
Yes, getting it hurt. Especially the inner arm bits (the tail and part of a rose).
Yes, I'm going to get it filled in with color. I'm thinking red/green for the roses and some pretty mystical colors for the unicorn and background.
No, people at the hospital don't act weird about it. I've been getting lots of compliments from everybody from patients to doctors.
No, it doesn't hurt very much at all anymore. It feels really good to have Vitamin A & D ointment on it, which is kind of a pain because it gets all over everything.
I went to George at Seventh Son. He was excited about doing a unicorn and designed it for me based on my feeble attempts at describing what I wanted ("Um. I want it to be really pretty and, like, triumphant? And magical looking. But not too overly realistic or cartoony."). He researched different photos of unicorns and was able to have in-depth conversations with me about the shape of its mouth and the swish of its tail.
Yes, tattoos are awesome, you should get one.

Girl Talk: Faultless Frivolity
Lets pretend I have $50 to spend, guilt free. What to spend it on? Hmmmmm......
Fifty dollars is an amount that really makes you think, because it's not A MILLION DOLLARS where you could list your wildest dreams and most ridiculous luxuries (a new car! an island! a herd of mini ponies!). It's fifty bucks.
Enough for almost fifty song downloads (now that some of the prices have gone up) or one bra from Victoria's Secret. Two tanks of gas. Twelve and a half trips across the Bay Bridge. One of my textbooks. Twenty-five lunches at the hospital, if I only get the soup.
As a Catholic and a member of a family with sky-high expectations, I have quite a bit of guilt to my name. So I tend to buy things that I can justify that I need, even if I don't really need them. Like, "I didn't need this new sweater, but it has been cold out and I really like it and I do need to wear clothes" or "I probably shouldn't have bought this movie, but I'm saving money because I don't pay for cable or internet." But Guilt Free is interesting. It means that I could buy some totally extravagant frill!
So, with that in mind, I think I would choose either a beautiful glass unicorn, probably one of these two.

Or, an old school Nintendo system and my favorite game from childhood.

I don't care if I'm a big dork, it's MY imaginary fifty dollars. So there.
